Modern Dance Classes

What we want from modern dance is courage and audacity.

Modern Dance uses modern, ballet and jazz based steps  to  emphasize emotional portrayal of a story or event.  This supports  the modern dance movement used in the  Royal Academy of Dance  syllabus, where the exploration  of movement is based on letting  emotion lead.  It also uses the opposite qualities of suspension  and  gravity in interpreting the music.  Modern is based on many  styles, including the Contemporary styles of Jose Limon, Paul  Taylorand Martha Graham.

Today’s Companies including “Ballet BC” and TV shows such as “So You Think You Can Dance” performances are based on a mixture of Ballet and Modern as the story or feeling of the pieces appeal to general audiences.

In our Dance Academy the students are introduced to important current choreographers as they develop this very important genre of Modern Dance.

The  students that are in the competitive level will participate in three to four competitions over the course of the dance season showcasing their performance in the studio year-end show.
